AI image generation has quickly become a popular – and somewhat controversial – pocket of the internet, so you might be wondering how to use apps like Stable Diffusion on your Mac. Stable Diffusion can easily create AI images on your Mac with the right solutions and setup is not difficult.
If you compete with others to create the craziest or most beautiful AI art, you may have been disappointed to find that apps like Midjourney or Dall-E require additional hoops like a Discord account. Steady Diffusion is a much simpler setup. Here’s what to do.
How to download Stable Diffusion on your Mac
Step 1: Make sure your Mac supports Stable Diffusion – there are two important parts.
First, you’ll need an M1 or M2 Mac for this download to work. Previous Macs do not support this application. If you have an older Mac, that’s fine – check out some of our alternatives below.
Second, you’ll want to update to the latest version of macOS Monterey before trying to use Stable Diffusion – these are relatively recent downloads and may not work with older versions of macOS.
Step 2: Visit the DiffusionBee website. Find Download for macOS button and select it.
Step 3: The installer will download. Wait for it to finish, then open it and transfer DiffusionBee to your apps to complete the installation. Once done, open DiffusionBee.
Step 4: At the top of the app, you’ll see that you’re on a tab Text to image, which is where you’ll want to be for typical image generation (the other tabs seem a bit buggy so far anyway). Just below you’ll find a text box where you enter the instructions for the AI image.
Step 5: Enter an image description as you would enter tags, with commas separating key phrases. Begin with a detailed description of the desired image, with the most important subjects and descriptors listed first. Then list any important attributes you want for the image, such as painting or photography style, high detail or blur, lighting details, etc. You can also list sources of direct inspiration for the AI to draw from, such as a TV show. or a specific painter or landscape.
Step 6: IN Advanced options you will also find options to adjust the size of the image and similar important parameters. After all adjustments are complete, select generate.
Step 7: If the generation doesn’t work, try again a few times – the AI may need a few tries to fully generate the image for you. Once it’s generated, you can copy or select it Save image download.
Alternative 1: Use the web application
If you have a Mac that won’t run DiffusionBee, all is not lost. There are other ways to take advantage of Stable Diffusion’s AI image generation capabilities, and you may not even need to download anything. Here’s one of our favorite alternatives:
Step 1: Head to the Hugging Face AI Generator. Hugging Face uses Stable Diffusion to generate the image, so you get similar results to downloading. Your options are not that advanced but they are very good and all you need is a reliable internet connection.
Step 2: Enter the challenge (advanced options are not currently available, so skip this part). Select when you’re ready Generate an image.
Step 3: The AI will generate four(ish) different images based on your prompt. If any of the images was exactly what you were looking for, you can select it to download and copy. You can also keep creating images until you find something you like.
Alternative 2: Use a Photoshop plugin
On the other hand, if you use Photoshop a lot, there is another option you can try. Christian Cantrell has developed a plugin to add Stable Diffusion to Photoshop: You can find and download it here.
The advantage of this approach is that you don’t need a second app to get its image generation capabilities. You also have access to all the advanced options that Stable Diffusion can support, and editing tools are instantly available to tweak the image to your liking.
However, it is a third-party app that is currently still very new. This means that it can introduce errors and cause other problems. Before you try to download Photoshop, make sure you have the latest version of Photoshop and be prepared to disable the plugin in case of problems.
