This bug doesn’t have a permanent solution yet, and it’s best left to the developers to fix it. However, if you’re not willing to wait for the next patch update, there are a few things you can do to make the problem in Modern Warfare 2 more tolerable.

Today’s guide will specifically discuss some of the steps you can take to try to fix the “Stutter and Frame Drops” error in the latest franchise entry.

Fixed “Stutter and Frame Drops” bug in Modern Warfare 2

Frame drops and game crashes are usually caused by incompatibility errors with Modern Warfare 2 and your system. While you can wait for Activision to release a patch to fix the optimization, there are a few things you can do on your end to fix the problem.

Therefore, in order to fix the “Stutter and frame Drops” problem in Modern Warfare 2, you will need to:

1) Check your system requirements and probably turn down your graphics

Lowering the graphics and display resolution of the game will be one of the best ways to deal with stuttering in the shooter. It is likely that your system does not support the graphics and texture fidelity that the shooter is currently running on. So your best bet would be to go through the minimum and recommended requirements for Modern Warfare 2 and tone down the graphics accordingly.

Below is a list of minimum and recommended system requirements for shooters:

minimum system requirements

  • OS – Windows 10 64bit
  • Processor – Intel® Core™ i3-6100 / Core™ i5-2500K or AMD Ryzen™ 3 1200
  • Memory – 8 GB RAM
  • GPU – NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960 or AMD Radeon™ RX 470 – DirectX 12.0 compatible system
  • Storage – 125 GB free space

Recommended system requirements

  • OS – Windows 10 64 Bit / Windows 11 64 Bit
  • Processor – Intel® Core™ i5-6600K / Core™ i7-4770 or AMD Ryzen™ 5 1400
  • Memory – 12 GB RAM
  • GPU – NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon™ RX 580 – DirectX 12.0 compatible system
  • Storage – 125 GB free space

2) Update game or scan installed files

It’s quite likely that a version mismatch is causing Modern Warfare 2 to drop frames on your system or that there are installed files that are corrupted. The best way to deal with this is to look for updated game files or scan existing ones.

Both the Battle.net and Steam clients allow you to search for the latest version of Modern Warfare 2 and even allow you to search for files in the installation directory to remove any that may have been corrupted.

After the scan is complete, the clients will either automatically update the shooter to the latest version or replace the damaged files with new ones.

3) Update GPU drivers

Updating your installed graphics drivers seems to have worked for many in the community as well. To do this, you can either use the appropriate Nvidia or AMD desktop application to automatically update drivers, or right-click the Start menu and open Device Manager. From there you can go to Display Adapters and then click the drop down to bring up the graphics driver.

Here you will find the update option and after clicking on it you will be able to update the GPU driver version.
