Hyundai unveiled the design of its next-generation KONA models on Monday. Instead of trying to make it look like just another gas-powered car, the automaker introduced elements that incorporate the direction the auto industry is heading — toward electric cars.
Hyundai goes bold with the new EV-inspired KONA 2024 design
After its first dedicated electric car, the IONIQ 5, won high praise for its “bold, futuristic” design, Hyundai is bringing the EV look to its KONA lineup.
Hyundai introduced its first electric KONA in 2018 to customers in Korea and Europe, and opened U.S. orders for the 2019 model. Although the electric KONA was redesigned last year, including a new front fascia, it still featured the minimalist look inherited from its gas-powered predecessors.
The all-new Hyundai KONA takes the opposite approach, introducing an EV-first approach. Hyundai started with the EV variant to bring its modern touches to the entire KONA range and adapt it for different powertrain variants.
SangYup Lee, executive vice president and head of Hyundai Design Center, said:
Enhanced with KONA’s unique character, the all-new KONA confidently expresses its bold and dynamic presence. KONA has evolved in every way to embrace an even wider range of diversity to become a true lifestyle advocate.
The new KONA is slightly larger at about 4.25 m long, making it 150 mm longer than the previous generation. In addition, it gained 25 mm in width and 60 mm in wheelbase length.
The most striking new feature is the flowing horizontal lamp that runs along the entire length of the vehicle’s nose, giving it a bolder and more aggressive look than previous models. The electric Kona features a pixelated front light bar, a first for Hyundai, a pixel-inspired 19-inch alloy wheel design and black wraparound lines.
Hyundai boasts a ‘living space’ interior that provides practical features and a personal car experience. The floating module and 12-inch wide displays provide a high-tech look with added ambient lighting.
More details on the 2024 Hyundai KONA are expected in the coming months, including pricing and powertrain specifications. Stay tuned for more.

Electrek’s Take
The new Hyundai Kona design is a significant improvement in my opinion. The updated “EV-derived” look gives it a dynamic off-road feel.
The bold, futuristic design incorporated into the IONIQ 5 has paid off hugely for them, so why not use its elements in the KONA as well? Hyundai has become the fastest-growing volume brand in the U.S. behind only Tesla over the past three years, and for a reason. With their vehicles, they look to the future, giving consumers a choice of stylish options designed for the new era of electric vehicles.
