Six microsatellites developed by the Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) were successfully launched on May 25 by the SpaceX Transporter-5 mission. Three GHGSat greenhouse gas monitoring and three HawkEye 360 radiofrequency (RF) geolocation microsatellites increase the total number of SFLs to 36-built satellites in orbit since 2020.
“SFL congratulates GHGSat and HawkEye 360 on their continued success and leadership in commercial space applications for microsatellites,” said SFL Director Dr. Robert E. Zee.
The recently launched GHGSat-C3, C4 and C5 satellites – named Luca, Penny and Diako – have joined three others already in orbit and have also been manufactured by SFL for GHGSat Inc. from Montreal. Using position control technology developed by SFL to accurately target sensors on board low-inertia platforms in orbit, the GHGSat constellation detects and measures greenhouse gas emissions from ground-based sources.
SFL has now developed 15 microsatellites for the HawkEye 360 of Herndon, Virginia. This constellation detects and geolocates RF signals for maritime situational awareness, emergency response, national security and spectrum analysis applications. SFL was selected for these missions due to the importance of flying in a multi-satellite formation for successful RF geolocation.
Other missions developed by SFL in the last two years include 16 CubeSat communications and three microsatellites for Earth observation, maritime surveillance and atmospheric monitoring.
SFL is a unique microspace provider that offers a complete set of nano-, micro- and small satellites – including high-performance, low-cost CubeSats – to meet the needs of a wide range of mission types from 3 to 500 kilograms. Since 1998, SFL’s legacy includes 61 operational successes and 31 currently under construction or awaiting launch. In its 24-year history, SFL has developed CubeSat, nanosatellites and microsatellites that have achieved more than 191 cumulative years of in-orbit operation.
About Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) (www.utias-sfl.net)
SFL generates higher revenues from smaller, cheaper satellites. The small satellites built by SFL are constantly pushing the boundaries of performance and disrupting the traditional cost paradigm. The satellites are built with advanced power systems, strict position control and high-volume data capacity, which is staggering given the budget. SFL arranges launches around the world and maintains a mission control center with access to ground stations around the world. SFL’s pioneering barrier-breaking work is a key prerequisite for tomorrow’s aggressive satellites and constellations. (www.utias-sfl.net)
