Samsung folding phones, although only three years on the market, have become quite successful. Naturally, this is partly because Samsung is the only manufacturer to sell folding phones worldwide, instead of limiting them to a few markets, and will continue to lead the folding phone segment for the foreseeable future.
And Samsung folding phones are also quite great considering all the circumstances. His Galaxy Z Fold series is only in its third iteration. The pace of progress here was nothing short of impressive. However, whether you’re a fan or not, I think we all agree that their photography options just don’t match what we expect from modern flagship smartphones. And with the Galaxy Z Fold 4, I think Samsung may just focus on upgrading to the wrong camera.
According to recent rumors, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 comes with the best 3x zoom camera of all Samsung smartphones, but the camera below the display, which debuted on the Z Fold 3, is moving from a 4-megapixel sensor to a 16-megapixel sensor. And if these rumors are true, then I think Samsung is going the wrong way.
The 4MP camera under the display on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is far from the best in the industry, but it would be dishonest to say that in most situations it will not do its job. Mostly designed for video calling, the selfie can be taken with a front camera on the outside screen that uses the same 10MP dual pixel lens as Samsung’s flagship non-Ultra Galaxy S, which means it gives you great results.
The camera below the display already acts as proof of the concept rather than something substantial. Samsung had to prove that it had the technical capability to implement UDC on a large scale. It wouldn’t matter much if the Infinity-O was retained, but UDC is what Samsung wants to give us, and UDC is what we get.
But no matter how good a 3x zoom camera can be on the Z Fold 4, it’s just not a step up from the previous Z Fold you’d like in 2022. It is definitely far from the zoom cameras you will find on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra or Galaxy. S22 Ultra and I’m disappointed that Samsung doesn’t seem interesting in bringing them to its folding line, at least not this year.
Of course, I understand that there are technical limitations when it comes to placing crazy high-end zoom cameras on folding phones. The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the Galaxy Z Fold series are generally quite thin to hold the periscope zoom lenses of the Samsung Ultra flagship.
But that doesn’t stop me from hoping that Samsung will find a way to customize things, because the disparity in zoom capabilities is the biggest obstacle in the way of moving to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold line. Well, that and the narrow cover display, which is too cramped and causes an uncomfortable user experience for a lot of the things you do on the phone in everyday life, including writing messages.
Still, a narrow screen is something I can do, because I can always lay out and use the main screen when I need a larger touch screen. However, there is no alternative to a zoom camera. With the Galaxy Z Fold series, you have a choice of two different selfie cameras, but you only have one camera to shoot distant things at a distance, and that’s just not enough.
Again, if the rumors are true and if we take into account the laws of physics, it seems likely that the Z Fold 4 will not be nearly as powerful for zoom photography as the Galaxy S Ultra smartphones. And that means my wait for the perfect Galaxy Z Fold – perfect for my use case – will continue at least until 2023, or even a year or more thereafter.
What about you? What’s stopping you from taking your Galaxy Z Fold or Galaxy Z Flip smartphone? Are they cameras, fragile folding screens (and the messy process of supporting Samsung to repair these folding screens when they are damaged), or something else? Let me know in the comments below!
