The City of Toronto is organizing a sale of land through a tender, known as a “property tax sale,” as a final step in collecting unpaid property taxes overdue. There are 22 properties for sale with a total of more than $ 21.1 million in unpaid property taxes. The deadline for submitting bids for the purchase of these properties is open until Wednesday, June 29.
As soon as the property accumulates arrears on property tax for two years or more, a confirmation of tax arrears against the ownership of the property is recorded. This allows the property to be put up for sale one year after registration of the Certificate, unless it is fully repaid by the owner or another applicant, such as a lien or mortgage holder. Real estate from the sale of taxes usually has large arrears and may not be occupied, or the owners may have died or moved and the closest relatives cannot be found.

The city makes every effort to contact the property owner by mail, telephone, on-site visits and talk to neighbors to find and inform the property owner before placing the property for sale. If the property owner pays the taxes due before the last day of the tax sale on June 29, he will be able to keep his property.
Anyone can buy real estate by submitting a bid (tender) on an approved form and all bid amounts must meet or exceed the minimum bid amount. The city accepts the highest eligible offer. All completed bids must be accompanied by a deposit (in the form of a certified check or bill of exchange) of 20 percent or more of the bid amount and must be submitted to the Revenue Services Inquiry and Payment Counter at North York Civic Center, 5100 Yonge St., by 29 June 15:00. Deposits are returned to unsuccessful applicants. The full payment must be made to the city within 14 days and a real estate tax document is issued. The city retains the money it owes them on taxes and all related costs and fees, and any balance in excess of the tax cancellation price is paid to the Ontario Court.
The opening of the public competition is scheduled for June 29 at 3:30 pm in Memorial Hall, Burgundy Room, 5110 Yonge St.
Property is purchased “as is” – bidders are strongly advised to seek legal advice before submitting a bid or taking ownership of property, as new property owners become liable for any existing liens or other title rights or any remedies that may be necessary.
