Apple stuffed a lot at its annual developer conference. On the WWDC stage, the company’s representatives offered the latest improvements coming in the fall for iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 and the upcoming improvements for macOS, watchOS and more. Apple also announced new hardware at this year’s keynote: the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro powered by the new M2 processor. Here is the biggest announcement from WWDC 2022.
iOS 16
The next iteration of the iPhone operating system will include new intelligence, sharing, and communication features, plus new ways to customize your smartphone. The key among the latter is the completely designed lock screen, which allows you to personalize most of the elements you see before unlocking the iPhone. You will be able to tap and customize any element of the lock screen, change the color and font of the time, add widgets from the widget gallery, and change the background using filters. If you prefer a photo as your background on the lock screen, you will now be able to set “random photo playback” as your background, which will scroll through multiple photos during the day.
Live activity also comes to the lock screen, which are basically widgets that update in real time as events happen. It allows you to better monitor things like sports games that are currently underway, Uber rides, workouts and more. The new lock screen will also better support different focus modes, allowing you to customize which alerts and notifications you will receive on the lock screen when you are in a particular focus mode. So, for example, you will be able to create a work-specific lock screen that will accompany your Work Focus mode.
iOS 16 will also bring some highly anticipated message updates, namely message editing, unsubscribing, and marking as unread. You will be able to edit sent messages so that you can get rid of any typos, undo messages you have just sent, and mark message threads as unread in case you want to return to them with a new view. Apple also extends SharePlay’s messaging capabilities, allowing you to share things like videos and watch them with friends while sending messages back and forth.
IPhone users will also have access to a new feature called Apple Pay Later in iOS 16. This will split purchases into four equal payments and spread them over many weeks with zero interest and fees. This should make it easier to pay for large purchases over time and will be accompanied by a new Order Tracking feature that allows you to track where your shipments are before they actually arrive at your door.
Apple has a series of Family Sharing updates planned for iOS 16, including easier ways for parents to manage their children’s accounts and devices. The new Quick Start setup process will make it easier for parents to set up a new Apple device for their child with all the necessary parental controls and restrictions. A more general new feature that comes with Family Sharing includes Photos – within your family you’ll have a dedicated library of shared photos on iCloud, a separate space where you can share the specific photos you want all your family members to see. Photos even gives you suggestions to share based on who’s in the photo and other factors, making it easier for you to pick and choose which pictures you want everyone to have access to.
There are a lot of other updates coming to Wallet, HomeKit, CarPlay and others, but another new feature in iOS 16 that we wanted to touch on here is Security Check. This is a new privacy feature that allows you to review and restore the access you have given to others. In case you ever need to revoke someone, you can use Security Check to do things like stop sharing your location using the Find and Reset permissions that you have previously granted to certain applications.
MacBook Air M2, a 13-inch MacBook Pro M2
Apple, which is atypical of WWDC, has unveiled a new piece of hardware on today’s keynote: the new MacBook Air M2. As the name suggests, the notebook runs on the company’s updated M2 chipset, from which Apple promises up to 18 percent faster CPU performance and 35 percent faster GPU performance than the M1 chipset. The new MacBook Air also has a completely new design – the wedge shape has disappeared from the previous model, as it has been replaced by a more angular design that remains quite slim with a thickness of 11.3 mm and only 2.7 pounds.
The MacBook Air M1 will have a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display that is 25 percent brighter than the previous model’s screen and supports one billion colors. It also has a 1080p webcam, a four-speaker sound system, a full-featured TouchID keyboard and a fanless interior design. Unfortunately, there are still only two Thunderbolt ports on this machine, but Apple has brought back MagSafe charging with a dedicated power port, so at least you won’t tie one of the two Thunderbolt ports with a charging cable. In terms of battery life, Apple estimates up to 18 hours of video playback on the MacBook Air M2. The new laptop will be available next month from $ 1,199.
The M2 chipset will soon be added to the 13-inch MacBook Pro and will provide a similar performance boost as the company’s next most popular notebook. The MacBook Pro M2 will have an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU, support for up to 24GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage, plus up to 20 hours of battery life. The updated 13-inch MacBook Pro M2 will also be available next month, starting at $ 1,299.
macOS Ventura
The upcoming version of macOS, called Ventura, will bring several new organization and collaboration features to Macs. Stage Manager is a new way to arrange application windows on the desktop, automatically placing the application you are working on in the foreground and center. Other active applications will be highlighted in a separate sidebar, where you can drag and drop files to share, copy / paste, and more.
Mail will receive updates similar to Messages in iOS 16, such as cancel sending, schedule sending, and reminders to return to emails later. Elsewhere in Safari, it will be easier to share multiple cards with friends and family and collaborate with them in real time. For example, if you plan to camp with many people, you can share multiple cards with your group with camping equipment, locations, information and other information, find out which cards they are actively viewing, and more.
New Handoff and Continuity features also come in FaceTime on macOS. In the first case, you’ll be able to seamlessly transfer the FaceTime call you initiated on your iPhone to your Mac, allowing you to use the larger screen when you need it. The new Continuity Camera feature is an interesting way to use your iPhone as a webcam. With magnetic stands in development, you’ll be able to attach your iPhone to your Mac’s screen and use its camera array as a webcam for FaceTime, Zoom, Microsoft Team, and other video calls. This process is also completely wireless, so you won’t have to worry about occupying one of your computer’s ports like you would with a standard external webcam.
Also worth noting here are Apple’s new passkey or digital keys securely stored on your device. These unique access keys, which are designed to replace passwords, are not stored in the cloud, which Apple says makes them much less prone to phishing and attempted theft. Access keys will integrate with TouchID and FaceID on Apple biometric authentication devices and can be synchronized with other Apple devices via the iCloud Keychain.
iPadOS 16
Many of the new features that will hit the iPadOS 16 are the ones we talked about from iOS 16 and macOS Venture. But iPads will also get things like new collaboration benefits, updated Game Center profiles and sharing options, and a custom version of Stage Manager for macOS. The latter feature is probably the most interesting new feature, as it helps move the iPad further into the realm of desktop alternatives. Stage Manager on the iPad allows users to resize application windows for the first time and also overlay application windows, making them more similar to the browser windows and programs you would use on the desktop. Add full external display support and the iPad’s thumb is even closer to becoming a real device that could replace a laptop.
watchOS 9
Apple Watch will get a number of practical new training features in watchOS 9. Most of them are limited to the Workout application, where you will be able to monitor heart rate zones during exercise and even set goals based on your heart rate zone. you want to stay. Runners will appreciate the new traceable metrics available in Workout, including vertical oscillation, stride length, and ground contact time. Finally, in the area of health and fitness, the new Apple Medications Watch application will make it easier for users to keep track of the medications, vitamins and supplements they take and how often they take them. It has a reminder function that uses audible and tactile alerts on the watch to ping you when you need to take one of our medications during the day.
